Hidden among Canonbury's grand garden squares, this is one of the best gastropubs in town, even if it's outside the city center. Set in a traditional Victorian boozer, the high-ceilinged, stark-white dining room is a perfect foil for the British fare. Ox tongue with black-currant starter is a snip at £6.50, and mains like haunch of venison or partridge with bread sauce are a reasonable £18. Summer pudding or grilled figs are cheap at £5.50, too.
