The friendly owners, Mr. and Mrs. Dorta, and an interesting historical tidbit (the property once was the home of pre-Raphaelite painter Sir John Everett Millais) set this B&B apart from the Gower Street hotel pack. Rooms are simple and comfortable in white and pastel shades. Those at the back are far quieter and overlook the hotel's pleasant garden, although even at the front, the double glazing somewhat tames the din of the students from nearby University College London. Pros: good location for museums and theaters. Cons: price a bit high for what you get; few services.

Stayed with 2 couples and 6 students (very well behaved ones - no, really!). Outstanding value in London, excellent location near Brit Museum, Tube, lots of little restaurants and a grocers or two. Quiet surroundings, mostly; inside, always. Sitting room with free internet always quiet and shuts early so no noisy people hanging around late(my room was right next to it, so that was important to me!) Breakfast was solid and generous - full english, plus yogurt, juice, cereals, fruit. Owners (Mr. only, really) seemed suspicious about the kids, and fussed at them some, but after they had no problems in a day or so, lightened up a little. My room was small but comfortable - Queen bed, little table with full tea set up, small closet, and tiny tiny bathroom. I am a big person (tall and, um, full figured...) but didn't have particular difficulty -- I've had more troubles in bigger hotels! Immaculately clean, and very honest help - must have left 20 pounds in coin and small bills amid my debris, and housekeeping just piled everything neatly according to type (guides, maps, money, and so forth.) Would absolutely stay there again.

I don't understand Fodor's talk of the Dortas being so friendly. Assuming they were the Dortas, they were friendly enough but not enough to make a deal over. This is an excellent, CLEAN boutique hotel. Computer/internet use is free in the sitting room. Rooms are impeccably clean and tidy. Very small, but great. Comfortable beds. The bathrooms are en suite and the tiniest you've ever been in, maybe including a cruise ship. Again, immaculate. I would not recommend their rooms for very large persons or those with disabilities. There is no elevator that I know of, and that makes the steps a bit much. Breakfast is great and plentiful. It is very convenient to the tube. We would definitely stay there again. A truly excellent value. Book early! Were there December of 2006.

Mr. and Mrs. Dorta made us feel very comfortable. The breakfast every morning was delicious and plentiful, giving us energy to last until mid-afternoon. Only 2 blocks from the tube was an extra bonus. We would definitely stay there again.
