Buckingham Palace is just around the corner, and visiting VIPs use the Goring as a convenient, suitably dignified base for royal occasions. The hotel, built in 1910 and now run by third-generation Gorings, retains an Edwardian style. It would never be described as "modern," with striped wallpaper and floral curtains combined with patterned carpets and brass fittings. But it is luxurious and welcoming all the same. Pros: comfortable beds; spacious rooms. Cons: decor is a bit fussy.

The Goring is now in it's fourth generation of the Goring family running the show. It's still excellent. Some of the rooms are smallish (as are the bathrooms), but the bar, restaurant and service are all first class. The full English breakfast is one of the best anywhere! Great concierge got us into a fully booked restaurant. We got a heavily discounted rate through lastminute.com. Will definitely stay there again. Very handy for Knightsbridge area for shopping.
