This aristocratic, late-Victorian, gabled town house has a clubby feel -- there's no sign, just a simple 11 above the door. Antiques, landscape paintings and portraits, coupled with some of that solid, no-nonsense furniture that real English country houses have in abundance make it seem like you're staying in a family home. The best rooms are at the back, overlooking a private garden. If you want to spare no expense and hire a chauffeur-driven car, there's one standing by. The complimentary freshly baked cake for afternoon tea, and sherry and canapés in the evening are excellent.

Eleven Cadogan Gardens has a new owner who has redecorated the hotel in a ghastly fashion -- dark walls, cheesy new furniture. The old charm is gone, as is the long-time staff. Be warned that the character of the hotel has been altered beyond recognition.
