Fodor's Review

Expect a boisterous best-of-British foodie crowd at one of Covent Garden's leading gastro-pubs, and proud doyenne of hearty retro-British dishes. Not far from the Royal Opera House, the ground-floor open kitchen eatery is done up with simple cardamom-color walls and bare-oak floors and tables. Unadulterated wine-fueled diners dive into nostalgic offerings like pressed tongue, pickled herrings, pigs' cheeks, and cockles or smoked mackerel with rhubarb. You'll find stacks of other unpretentious vintage British fare, like brown crab on toast, brawn, rabbit livers, or Swaledale beef mince pie, plus hunking great roasts for the table—think seven-hour shoulder of lamb with dauphinoise potatoes. Salads and veggies follow the same theme, from sweet heritage carrots to forgotten Roseval potatoes.
