Why We Like It

You won’t find anywhere cheaper than the Celtic Hotel that boast the same location close to the heart of the West End. It’s clean, comfortable and, most importantly, allows you to spend your money on your trip rather than your lodgings.

Fodor's Expert Review

Guests on a budget will do well to find anywhere as reasonable as the Celtic Hotel so close to the center of London. A small bed and breakfast in Russell Square, the property is a solid choice for couples or groups who want to save their spending money for the city rather than splash out on a hotel. Despite the low costs, the homely hotel makes for a comfortable stay.

Tip Confusingly, the Celtic Hotel website still refers to the old St. Margaret’s Hotel (they merged) but don’t let that put you off.

Room

Rooms are modest spaces which take care of the basics—the basics being a bed and basin at the least. Available in a variety of sizes, the hotel is used to accommodating a range of guests from singles to groups of four.

You Should Know The cheapest rooms come with a shared bathroom. Some also come with shower or toilet, which makes for one of life’s great decisions.

Bathroom

Basic bathrooms are all dependent on the room rate you choose, which means some come with showers and others just a toilet.

Lobby

Instead of a lobby, the townhouse hotel provides a lounge for guests to use at their leisure.

Dining

The hotel has no restaurant but breakfast is served in a light-filled dining room.

What's Nearby

Getting Around

Right next to Russell Square, guests should make the most of the picturesque neighborhood with walks around the quiet backstreets. Attractions like the British Museum are within walking distance and while the West End is a mere 15-minutes away, Russell Square Underground Station is an alternative should you want to save your legs. Easy to pick up a taxi, just head to Russell Square and hail.

Restaurants

The Busaba Eathai (10-minute walk) chain is a dependable option for good Thai food and cocktails. For dreamy Taiwanese food, head to Bao Fitzrovia (12-minute walk) and eat your weight in steamed buns.

Bars

Located on Sicilian Avenue, the Holborn Whippet (7-minute walk) is the perfect place for al fresco beers when the sun’s out. While beautiful, the Atrium Bar (1-minute walk) comes with the risk of gaining a stiff neck should you spend too long gazing up at the bar’s eponymous atrium. Still, a cricked neck is worth it for the spectacle.
