Ace Hotel London Shoreditch

100 Shoreditch High St., London, E1 6JQ, England

Toby Orton

If Shoreditch is London’s hippest neighborhood then the Ace is its hotel headquarters. The international hotel choice for globetrotting urban creatives, the Ace Hotel London matches the chain’s achingly cool credentials to a tee. If you can make it beyond the throngs of MacBook wielding creative types who swell the lobby, you’ll find a contemporary cocktail bar, a beautifully designed restaurant, a live events space and even a climbing wall before you hit the rooms.

YOU SHOULD KNOW If image conscious creative types give you the shivers, the Ace Hotel couldn’t be further from the place for you.

room

What better way to settle into your room than with a little musical accompaniment from the Ace Hotel-curated playlist delivered from in-room DAB radios? Modernist chic meets Ikea basics, the boxy rooms are comfortable and refreshingly understated.

bathroom

The monochrome tiled bathrooms adhere to the same understated aesthetic as the rooms, and it’s left to the Rudy’s Barbershop toiletries to lather up some luxury.

lobby

Hot desk heaven, the spacious lobby offers a large area for guests and locals alike to work remotely. A cozy entrance filled with wooden stylings, low lights, rug, and sofas gives it the feel of a group hang—only between hotel strangers.

gym

There may not be a pool but there is, in typical Ace Hotel fashion, an art-installation-cum climbing wall. Alternatively, there’s a well-equipped gym and sauna if you don’t have a head for heights.

dining

Connected to the hotel, Hoi Polloi is a trendy wood panelled brasserie with a modernist theme. Serving modern European cuisine, it’s also a hip spot for brunch or evening cocktails at the bar.

The nearby ‘Pho Mile’ is a strip of Vietnamese restaurants that runs a substantial length of Kingsland Road and happens to be the best place in London to eat Vietnamese food.

drinking

The low-key Gallery Bar on the ground floor is something of an extension of the lobby, where cocktails, dancing, and peacocking are ‘the jam’—as they say at The Ace.

LOCATION

Getting Around

Located in the heart of uber-trendy Shoreditch, it is ideally situated for the bars, restaurants, galleries and shopping of east London. Central London tourist sights are easily reachable by bus or train connections from Shoreditch High Street Overground.

Restaurants

If you want something a little more laid back than the Ace’s Hoi Polloi, the excellent Song Que Café (8-minute walk) serves a mean pho. If you’re in the mood for meat and cocktails, Hawksmoor (6-minute walk) is the best place for steak, while the Clove Club (4-minute walk) does chic fine dining with east London cool.

Bars

If the hip parade at the hotel bar gets too much then retire to either of the equally hip—but much less styled—Owl & the Pussycat or Well and Bucket pubs. Or, keep it classy with cocktails at the beautiful Callooh Callay.

WHY WE LIKE IT

If you’re looking to base yourself in the heart of London’s creative East End then nowhere is better to ingratiate yourself with the area’s creative citizens than the Ace Hotel. Rooms may verge on the simple but their interior décor is as carefully considered as the rest of the hotel’s public spaces. The bar and restaurant can feel cloyingly cool, but the beauty of Shoreditch is there are dozens of alternatives on your doorstep.
