Whitworth Art Gallery Review

This University of Manchester-run art museum has strong collections of British watercolors, old-master drawings, and postimpressionist works, as well as wallpapers. The excellent textile gallery—befitting a city built on textile manufacture—demonstrates the meaning and power of clothing in such items as a 16th-century Spanish funeral cope, 18th-century babies' vests, and a modern-day Turkish circumcision suit. A good bistro and a gift shop are also here. To get to the museum, catch any southbound bus with a number in the 40s (except 47) on Oxford Road, or from St. Peter's Square or Piccadilly Gardens.
