With the laid-back friendliness of a B&B but with most of the style of a fancier country-house hotel, this is a very good value for the money -- especially if you can get one of the rooms with a great view across the valley from the front of the house. The 19th-century Gothic house, between Hawkshead and Tarn Hows, is on 30 acres of land. Breakfast is wholesome and vegetarian.
