Fodor's Review:
Sublime views and exceptional service and cuisine add distinction to this country-house hotel on the shores of Ullswater. Salons with oil paintings and fringed lamp shades represent classic Lakeland style. The bedrooms are plushly opulent, although those in the Edwardian Gatehouse and in the Bank House, an Elizabethan farmhouse about 1 1/2 mi away, are somewhat simpler. Your sophisticated dinner (reservations essential, fixed-price menu, £££££) might include roast salmon on scallop risotto or venison with sweet potato confit. Be sure to request the lake-view dining room. Stop by for afternoon tea (£17.50).
