This early-19th-century pub-restaurant in a thatched cottage has an elegant dining space in the conservatory and more casual tables in the airy bar. The beautifully presented, carefully sourced dishes are modern British with a hint of Mediterranean color—think poached hake in saffron and pimentón sauce, or duck breast served with cimi di rapa (an Italian dish made with turnip leaves), orange oil, and pistachios. The long wine list is predominantly Italian, but
there are also some good New World choices. Madingley is 5 miles west of Cambridge, about a 10-minute taxi ride.
