From Dedham, on the banks of the River Stour, you can rent a rowboat (Easter-Sept., daily 10-5, weather permitting. £6 per hour. 01206/323153), an idyllic way to travel the 2 mi downriver to Flatford where you can see Flatford Mill, one of the two water mills owned by Constable's father, and the subject of his most famous painting, The Hay Wain (1821).
