The region's major points of interest—Bath, the Cotswold Hills, and the Gloucester-Cheltenham axis—are one way to organize your explorations. Bath, in the southwestern corner of this area, is a good place to start; it can also be visited on a day out from London. The Cotswold Hills, about two hours by car from London, cover some of southern England's most beautiful terrain, with which the characteristic stone cottages throughout the area are in perfect harmony. To the west of the Cotswolds lie the city of Gloucester and Cheltenham, a former spa town; beyond them, between the River Severn and the border of Wales, is the Forest of Dean. The road from Gloucester to Bath takes you by the castle at Berkeley.
