The National Waterways Museum, in a converted Victorian warehouse, contains examples of canal houseboats, including gaily painted "canal ware"—ornaments and utensils found on barges. Exhibits interpret the role of canals in the 18th and 19th centuries, and you can try your foot at "walking the wall"—the boatmen's way of propelling barges through tunnels with their feet.
