The Cotswolds are really about the art of living, as this 15th to 16th-century former wool merchant's house demonstrates. The stylish retreat, which retains its beamed ceilings, Jacobean staircase, and Elizabethan fireplace, has four-poster beds in all rooms but one and creative theme rooms such as the Medieval Garden, Dovecote, and Arabian Nights. One pricier room has a private pool. Downstairs, the March Hare dining room (£24.50, fixed-price menu; closed Sunday and Monday) serves delicious Thai food such as red snapper curry with coconut and lime leaves.

We recently stayed in the Tuscany Room for two nights. It certainly had the desired ambiance of a 500 year old room, but unfortunately that included very low light, which made reading impossible at night. The restaurant chef at the March Hare arrived two months ago and the dinner menu no longer features Thai food. The full English Breakfast is served by charming staff.
