It's worth detouring a bit for this supremely appealing pub on the village green at Great Tew (12 mi east of Moreton), where you can still buy snuff and smoke a clay pipe. The bar has impressive malt whiskies, and mugs and jugs hangs from the beams. The small restaurant (££; no dinner Sunday) chalks up a traditional but creative menu. A spiral stone staircase leads to the bedrooms, which have brass bedsteads or four-posters, and traditional quilted bedcovers. Reservations are essential for both staying and eating here. From Moreton, take A44 to Chipping Norton, then A361 to B4022.
