Money Matters in Copenhagen

ATMs

ATMs are located around town. Look for the red logos "Kontanten/Dankort Automat." Here you can use Visa, Plus, MasterCard/Eurocard, Eurochequecard, and sometimes JCB cards to withdraw money. Machines are usually open 24 hours, but some are closed at night.

Currency Exchange

Almost all banks (including the Danske Bank at the airport) exchange money. Most hotels cash traveler's checks and exchange major foreign currencies, but they charge a substantial fee and give a lower rate. The exception to the rule—if you travel with cash—are the several locations of Forex (including the main train station and close to Nrreport Station). For up to $500, Forex charges only DKr 20 for the entire transaction. Keep your receipt and it will even change any remaining kroner you may still have back to dollars or another currency for free. For traveler's checks, it charges DKr 10 per check. Den Danske Bank exchange is open during and after normal banking hours at the main railway station, daily June through August 7 AM-10 PM, and daily September through May, 7 AM-9 PM. American Express is open weekdays 9-5 and Saturday 9-noon. The Change Group—open April through October, daily 10-8, November through March, daily 10-6—has several locations in the city center. Tivoli also exchanges money; it is open May through September, daily noon-11 PM.
