The Opera Copenhagen (Operahurst) is the long-awaited home of the Royal Danish Opera on the southern side of the harbor on Dock Island, Holmen. It opened in January 2005, only three years after construction began. It was funded virtually by one individual, Denmark's wealthiest man, Mærsk McKinney-mller, who bankrolled the project. He chose Henning Larsen, one of Denmark's best architects, to plan and design the Opera House, and its unique location allows it to be seen throughout the entire inner harbor. You approach the Opera House via water taxi or water bus. The interior of the theater hall is being called the "conch." Depending on the orchestra's pit size, the hall contains between 1,400 and 1,700 seats. The building features many roof terraces and a cafeteria with a view over Holmen and Øresundsbroen. In response to its splendid new space, the Royal Danish Opera plans to increase its repertoire in 2006/07 to seven or eight new productions per season. The ticket office opens 90 minutes before performances, and standing-room-only tickets are available from the Royal Theater Tickets Office on Tordenskjoldsgade the same day after 1 PM. Tickets can also be purchased through Billetnet (above).
