The Paul

The Paul Review

From the champagne aperitif to the dessert of blackberries with licorice ice cream, dining at the Paul is never dull. Located in the middle of Tivoli and only open during the park's season, this exquisite glass-enclosed pavilion is favored by those in the entertainment industry and members of the Danish royal family. Chef Paul Cunningham combines local products with items from elsewhere to create such interesting dishes as Danish turbot served with Jerusalem artichokes poached in Noilly Prat dry vermouth and paired with a French Chardonnay. Dishes on the seven-course tasting menu and the three-course menu known as "ma cuisine" are lovingly prepared in an open kitchen. There is no à la carte menu. Service is flawless.

I woke this morning feeling I had been robbed. Although, and let's be clear first off, that I stand roughly 172cm and weigh 57 kilos so there was no excuse for having left wanting more.
My son, Danish born, was equally disappointed.
We were recommended 'The Paul' for a promising
afternoon and left confused and disappointed. For a smacking 890DKK one should not have to ask for more of the over emphasized organic french apple juice. I don't believe I even got to finish the tiny bottle as they kept taking it away only to surface twice at our table to allow me a rationed portion...as with the rolls and over priced water? (it was a set menu...is water not included in that?) I felt I was being given a lesson in deprivation and all the pomp and circumstance was entirely anti-climatic. The room, at least where we were placed, was 'tacky' I cannot come up with a more fitting adjective while at 13:30 in the afternoon there were only 2 other tables seated...( another lesson in saving the best? for whom?) The food was 'ok' but nothing to write home about which in our case is Denmark and Sweden and certainly nothing that kept us from being forced to purchase a bag of pomme frite in Tivoli while trying to salvage our birthday expedition. Shame on you Paul, get a small, less pretentious location with a better staff and serve up some beautiful and satisfying food, there's plenty for everyone! Cristiaana Sabella
