Round out your visit to the Free State of Christiania with a meal at Spiseloppen, a 160-seat warehouse restaurant that was a military storage facility and an army canteen in its former life. Upon entering Christiania, wind your way past shaggy dogs, their shaggy owners, graffiti murals, and wafts of patchouli. (There are few street signs, so just ask; Spiseloppen is the neighborhood's best-known restaurant.) From the outside, this run-down warehouse with splintered windows may seem a bit forbidding, but inside it's a different story. Climb up rickety stairs to the second floor and you're rewarded with a loft-size dining room with low, wood-beam ceilings and candles flickering on the tables. The menu highlights are fresh and inventive vegetarian and fish dishes, which might include artichokes stuffed with eggplant or portobello mushrooms served with squash, mango, and papaya. One floor down is Loppen, a club that hosts midweek jazz sessions and DJ dance nights on the weekends. Some contend that this place doesn't have the deals it once had, but you're still in the heart of happy hippiedom.
