Husmanns Vinstue

Fodor's Review:

If you're looking for old-world Denmark, this is it. Founded in 1888, this warmly lighted basement restaurant is housed in a former stable dating from 1727, which accounts for the low ceilings. Beer mugs dangle above the bar, dark-green lamps shed light onto the heavy wooden tables, and black-and-white photographs of Copenhagen hang on the walls. Until 1981 women were allowed to enter only if accompanied by a male, a rule established by one of the restaurant's female owners. Even Walt Disney and the Danish royal family have tucked into the hearty Danish smrrebrd. While other Danish lunch spots may serve salads and lighter cuisine, here you can feast on all types of herring (fried, curried, marinated, and spiced), smoked eel with scrambled eggs, beef tartare with egg yolk, homemade sausage, and roast beef with potato salad, all served on your choice of rye or white bread.
