The name means "At the Moat" and harks back to the time when the street was indeed a moat separating the Old Town from the New Town. Today the pedestrian zone Na príkope is prime shopping territory. Sleek modern buildings have been sandwiched between baroque palaces, with the latter cut up inside to accommodate casinos, boutiques, and fast-food restaurants. The new structures are fairly identical inside, but at the end of the block, Slovanský dum (No. 22) is worth a look. This late-18th-century structure has been tastefully refurbished and now houses fashionable boutiques, stylish restaurants, and one of the city's better multiplex cinemas.
