Fodor's Expert Review Moravský Krumlov

Brno Public Art

Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.

Admirers of art nouveau master Alfons Mucha may find themselves drawn 50 km (30 miles) off the main highway linking Mikulov and Brno. This town château was the unlikely home of Mucha's most celebrated works, his 20-canvas Slav Epic, which tells the story of the emergence of the Slav nation. The enormous work was not well received when it was completed in 1928; painters at the time were more interested in imitating modern movements, and considered Mucha's representational art to be old-fashioned. The city of Prague owns the paintings and took possession of them in 2011 for two years while the Krumlov château was renovated. They are supposed to go back on display in the château in 2014.
