For budget fare, leave the main square, Trg bana Jela?i?a, and go up the steps toward Dolac (the main market). Halfway up the steps on your right is a row of bistros where you can get everything from bureks (a savory cheese- or meat-filled pastry) to simple pizzas to Balkan-style grilled meats for around half what you'd pay at a modestly priced restaurant. And do remember, though Zagreb is not exactly overflowing with budget sandwich shops, traditional bakeries have long fulfilled that role for locals; at such places, which are on practically every street corner, you can pick up a burek for as little as 10 Kn a piece.
Nestled in a courtyard lying a 10-minute walk uphill beyond the cathedral, Baltazar is best known for barbecue classics of the region such as ražnjići (pork kebabs), čevapi (spiced ground-meat), and zapečeni grah (oven-baked beans). The interior is elegant, albeit slightly smoky, and the spacious courtyard has leaf-shaded seating. Complementing the main restaurant at the same location are the Japanese restaurant Hanami and the Baltazar wine bar, offering fresh fish and the best of local and international wines.
This quaint, unpretentious restaurant offers superb food, an excellent wine list, and friendly, professional staff. The menu changes frequently depending on the seasons and what's fresh at the morning market, but you can expect creative dishes such as shrimp risotto with wild asparagus as well as a selection of wines including all of Croatia's best varieties.
