  • 1. Trsteno Arboretum

The area around Dubrovnik has many fine examples of summer villas built by noble families, but the one in Trsteno is something special. Within the grounds of a small Renaissance villa is an arboretum set up during the 16th century by the Gučetić family. Laid out on a geometric plan, the garden is filled with hundreds of exotic species of trees and shrubs, most of which were brought home from distant voyages by local sailors. An original aqueduct is still in use, and a Baroque fountain of Neptune and two nymphs dates from 1736. The site has been continuously developed for five centuries, acquiring Renaissance, Baroque, and Romantic forms along the way. The surroundings are breathtaking, with the grounds running down toward a cliff overlooking the sea. Buses run regularly to Trsteno from Dubrovnik, and it makes a great stopover on the way to the Pelješac Peninsula. For something a little different, organize a cooking class at a local house within the grounds of the Arboretum. Katja's family has lived in the house for four generations, and together you will prepare a feast which might include black risotto, peka, or pašticada. Tour price includes admission to the arboretum, and Katja will also take you on a walking tour of the grounds. The cooking class can be booked through Secret Dalmatia.
