  • 2. Open Markets

At two open markets in Dubrovnik, you can get a wonderful glimpse into local life, as well as pick up a few goodies. The market in Gundulićeva Poljana (Gundulić Square), beside Pucić Palace, is a great place to try local delicacies from Dubrovnik and Konavle such as dried figs, liqueurs, and delicious candied fruit peels. Plan your visit for noon to see the local man who feeds the pigeons—it's quite the spectacle to see hundreds of pigeons flock to the square in anticipation. Across town at the market in Gruž, you'll find even more fresh produce and you're likely to be the only tourist around; every morning from around 6 am, locals come to pick up fruits, vegetables, fish, and flowers. It's easy to forget that Dubrovnik is a living, working city; this market and the café-bars around it are an excellent reminder.
