This was once the shallow sea channel separating the island of Laus from the mainland. Although it was filled in during the 12th century, it continued to divide the city socially for several centuries, the nobility living in the area south of Placa and the commoners living on the hillside to the north. Today it forms the venue for the korzo, an evening promenade where locals meet to chat, maybe have a drink at one of the numerous open-air cafés, and generally size
one another up.
