With locals and visitors alike enjoying a meal at the large wooden tables, lots of space and antique toys for the kids, and the air scented with smoke from the outdoor firepits where cooks are making homemade čvarci (pork cracklings), the lively terrace at Baranjska Kuća is the best place to soak up the Baranja atmosphere. Considered one of the best restaurants in Slavonia, it is a great place to try typical Slavonian dishes such as čobanac and beans cooked in clay pots, or more unusual dishes such as snails in nettle sauce. Be sure to check out the super interesting and impressive outdoor ethnographic museum in the back; the "Street of Forgotten Times" showcases what traditional life in the area was like with full-sized reconstructions of barber shops, woodworking sheds, and even pubs from times gone by, all using original materials.
On the bank of the Drava, just across the river from the Osijek Zoo, Kompa takes traditional dishes to another level. Their homemade sausages are perfectly spicy, the koljenica (pig's knuckle) is a firm favorite, and if you are around on a Sunday or holiday, join the locals for a big feast of teleće pečenje (roast veal). The service is friendly and attentive, and the ambience is peaceful. It's a shame about the mosquitoes but it's to be expected from a riverside restaurant, and they have bug spray on hand if needed.
Under the glow of the Kino Urania sits Lumiere restaurant, a bright light in a city full of old-school restaurants. The menu is Italian-inspired, with a wide range of pasta, steaks, and seafood, and offers a modern take on Slavonian favorites such as crna svinja (black pig). There's a romantic terrace, and the large interior is decorated with black-and-white movie photos, a nod to the classic cinema next door. Locals love it because it's modern and sophisticated; you'll love it when you're ready for something that doesn't involve paprika.
Located in a big redbrick building around the corner from the Cathedral, this dark, publike restaurant specializes in grilled meat and pizza cooked in a giant wood oven.
This cozy family restaurant with a small patio and pleasant, down-to-earth staff is a local favorite. They serve up reliably good pizza and selection of simple, traditional meals. It's tucked away in the corner of the parking lot beside the old water tower after which it is named.
This apricot-color restaurant with a charming farmhouse look rests on an islet reached by a pedestrian bridge behind the Hotel Lav. Carp, catfish, pike-perch, and other freshwater fish are the favorites here, whether grilled, fried, or in a thick, vegetable-rich sauce. The spacious, thatched-roof terrace overlooks the river while the interior features reed walls and wood-beamed ceilings. You can get a huge, four-person bowl of paprika-rich riblji paprikaš (fish stew).
