Osijek
Far from where sea-spirited tourists typically tread—and surrounded on all sides by cornfields—Osijek is an often overlooked treasure trove of cultural and architectural attractions. Although it came out of the Yugoslav war the worse for wear, a revival has been going on here ever since. Eastern Croatia's largest city (pop. 115,000) and the economic, administrative, and cultural capital of Slavonia, it rests on the south bank of the Drava River, 22 km (14 mi) west of that river's confluence with the Danube, a short drive from the Hungarian border to the north and the Republic of Serbia and Montenegro to the east.
