Central Hotel

Trg Ante Starčevića 6, Osijek, Osjecko-Baranjska, 31000, Croatia

It could use some sprucing up, but Osijek's oldest continuously operated hotel, opened in 1889, is somehow romantic in its decay. A spiral staircase with a (frayed) red carpet and wrought-iron railing leads to spacious, elegant rooms with armchairs and sofas. Some rooms have balconies, and all the bathrooms have bidets. Request a large double with a king-size bed and a view of the main square for no extra cost; most of the doubles are a bit smaller, with twin beds. The entrance is off an arcade on Trg Ante Starčevića.

PROS

  • old-world elegance at a decent price
  • splendid views of main square from many rooms
  • elegant bathrooms

CONS

  • some rooms are noisy, few frills
