Top Reasons to Visit

Back to Nature. Belgium's reputation for being flat and featureless is gloriously disproved on even the briefest of trips to the Ardennes; even townscapes, such as Namur and Liège are surrounded by thick greenery and hilltops perfect for surveying the surrounding countryside. Venture out farther and you'll discover clandestine forest walkways and rugged trails. And even though the summer months attract the majority of tourists, winter visits can prove most rewarding, when, between November and March, the place is sprinkled with a covering of snow that makes for some marvelous scenic splendor.

A Place of Learning. Most towns offer much in the way of local history, from museums and ancient churches to ruins and battlegrounds and provide much insight into the region's sometimes turbulent history.

Small Town Variety. The Belgian countryside is more densly populated than is often expected and you'll be pleasantly surprised at the variety of small towns and villages. The area around Malmédy is especially rewarding.

Keep Active. Set up camp in one of the local towns and spend a day hiking or biking in the hills and forests of the surrounding area. If you find yourself here during the snowbound period, cross-country skiing resorts cater to the adventurous.

Step it up a Gear. Held annually around the beginning of September, the Belgian Grand Prix at Francorchamps is one of the most internationally renowned race circuits and what it lacks in length it more than makes up for in excitement. Make sure you book your tickets in advance.
