Kayaking
Kayaking or boating on the Meuse, or its lively tributary, the Lesse, is a great way to see the landscape: forested valleys, rocky cliffs, and countless streams. To tackle the lower Lesse, try the 12-km (8-mi) or 21-km (13-mi) ride from Houyet, through two rapids and past the high cliffs holding Walzin Castle, to Anseremme on the Meuse, south of Dinant. The season runs April-October. Rentals start at around EUR 10 per person.
Ansiaux Kayaks (rue du Velodrome 15, Dinant, B5500. 082/22-23-25. www.ansiaux.be), a branch of Les Kayaks Bleus, offers guided kayak trips from Houyet to Anseremme (about five hours, 21 km ) and from Gendron to Anseremme (about three hours, 12 km ). Rental prices for a single-seat kayak are €15 (weekday) or €16 (weekend) for the Houyet route and €14 (weekday) or €15 (weekend) for the Gendron route. They also run day-long cruises along the Meuse and lead all-terrain biking and rock-climbing trips.
Bateaux Bayard (rte. de Phillipville, Dinant, B5500. 082/22-22-10. www.dinantourism.com) offers guided kayak and caving trips that last 45 minutes to an entire day. Kayak rentals cost €12 or €16 for a single-person boat, €24 or €32 for a double. Compagnie des Bateaux (rue Daoust 64B, Dinant, B5500. 082/22-23-15. www.bateaux-meuse.be), affiliated with Les Kayaks Bleus, guides kayak trips from Houyet and Gendron to Anseremme. Kayaks Libert (quai de Meuse 1, Dinant, B5500. 082/22-61-86 or 081/22-22-10. www.dinantourism.com) organizes trips for individuals and groups; the routes for individuals go between Houyet and Dinant and Gendron and Dinart. Kayak rentals cost €12 or €16 for a single-person boat, €24 or €32 for a double. They also have boat tours on the Meuse, starting with a 45-minute run for €5.50. Les Kayaks Bleus (pl. d'Eglise 2, Dinant, B5500. 082/22-43-97. www.lessekayaks.be), affiliated with Ansiaux Kayaks, offers guided kayak trips from Houyet and Gendron to Anseremme at the same prices. They also offer caving, rock climbing, and "aerial" or "bridge-walking" tours. You can combine two different tours for a full day of activities.
