Kattestoet (Festival of the Cats)

Kattestoet (Festival of the Cats) Review

The Kattestoet is one of Europe's most fanciful celebrations, held on the second Sunday in May in even-numbered years. A town jester throws hundreds of velvet cats from Ieper's town belfry, a custom originating centuries ago when "Cat Wednesday" marked the final day of the annual market. Until 1817, live cats were tossed to symbolize the expulsion of evil spirits, but animal lovers prevailed. Now the Kattestoet is a happy tradition, with a parade, flags flying, coats of arms displayed, and feline giants Cieper and Minneke Poes as special guests.
