Diksmuide

Diksmuide

Like Ieper, Diksmuide was completely destroyed during the First World War and rebuilt in its original style, which you can savor best from the Grote Markt, the spacious square flanked by brick-gabled buildings and dominated by the huge, spired St. Niklaaskerk. Even more impressive is the IJzertoren (Iron Tower) war memorial, originally from 1930, but blown up in 1946 by the resistance who regarded it as a symbol of Flemish collaboration during the Second World War.
