Leiestreek

Bucolic Leiestreek (Leie Region) has attracted many painters, and it's especially pleasant to discover their work in its original setting. The best way to enjoy the willow-lined banks of the meandering Leie is by rented motorboat or bike. Sint-Martens-Latem, with its 15th-century wooden windmill, drew several important artists in the years before World War I. Among these were Gustave van de Woestyne and Constant Permeke; Permeke went on to become a leading Expressionist painter.
