Located midway between Brugge and Brussels, Gent is the capital of the East Flanders Province. Its canals, gables, castles, beguinages, medieval lanes, art masterpieces, and settings that recall Breugel paintings beautifully mix with modern facades and street-side fashions. In the 16th century, only Paris was a greater European power than Gent, so it isn't surprising that it has more monuments than any other Belgian city or that it's the biggest city in the province.
