Inspired by the George V in Paris, the Plaza opened in 1930 and has maintained a grandiose reputation. The public spaces have soaring ceilings and ornate chandeliers; guest rooms have imposingly heavy wooden furniture. Deluxe rooms and suites have free access to a neighboring fitness center. The bar-restaurant has a domed roof; the breakfast room is palatial. But the real treasure is the hotel's historic theater, a former cinema that is now used for conferences, banquets, and presentations. Pros: good central location. Cons: it's not an unsafe or seedy area, but there are sex shops and lap-dancing clubs close by; parking is EUR 30 per day.
