Westvleteren

Westvleteren

Although Westvleteren is considered by some to be the best beer in the world, it's neither mass-produced nor widely distributed, and hence isn't available in regular stores. Almost the only place to get it is right here. Cars regularly line up outside the doors of the abbey in order to stock up. The limit is 10 cases per car, but due to the demand, people often drive away with much less. The monks only produce enough beer (4,800 hectoliters) to support themselves and their good works; several times a year they run out of stock. If you'd like to buy their Trappist beer, call to check the availability (057/40-10-57) before you go. Beer is sold daily 10-noon and 2-5, except on Friday, Sunday, holidays, and during the first two weeks of January.
