Achel

Achelse Kluis is the most recent abbey to produce Trappist beer. It was founded in 1686 and originally housed a community of hermits. Monks from Westmalle founded the present abbey in 1846. For over a century they committed themselves mainly to farming and craftsmanship. In 1999 the monks began producing highly fermented beer, making their abbey Belgium's sixth Trappist brewery. You'll recognize Achel Blonde 8 (the number refers to the percentage of alcohol) by its white cap, and Browne 8 by its golden one. Achel Extra is a slightly stronger brown variant. Achel's beers are not yet as widely available as some of the other Trappist beers such as Westmalle, Rochefort, and Chimay, but you can buy them here in the modest shop next to the abbey. A six-pack costs EUR 7.52.
