Nightlife in Vienna

Vienna Nightlife

Vienna's nightlife and arts scenes present visitors with many tantalizing choices, so it's probably good sense to do some planning if you want to maximize your entertainment. Do you want to time warp back to the 18th century at Mozart concerts featuring bewigged musicians in the opulent surroundings at Schönbrunn Palace?

Or perhaps you'd like to cheer the divas at the grandest of grand opera

at the Staatoper, or dive into the Franz Josef splendor of an evening concert of Strauss waltzes, or enjoy a trombone troupe at a Jazzkeller? Maybe catch a musical extravaganza devoted to the life of Jugendstil painter Gustav Klimt at Künstlerhaus? Or will it be a baroque opera in a stunning avant-garde setting at the Theater an der Wien (where Beethoven's Fidelio premiered in 1805)? The choices are seemingly endless during the regular season, which runs from September to June.

During the summer months, Vienna turns into a festival town. Whether it is ImPulsTanz for contemporary dance or the chamber music festival amid 18th-century frescoes at the Laudon Water Palace, the number of choices will leave you feeling spoiled. The arts are not just for tourists, and locals enthusiastically partake of their city's rich cultural offerings. While members of the bourgeoisie discuss opera singer Anna Netrebko's most recent performance, hipsters will flock to a concert by guitarist Klaus Trabitsch and accordionist Otto Lechner, who mix traditional Austrian songs with world music influences.

One word of caution: the city's culture vultures like to dress up for the occasion. Never take your coat inside the theater or the opera. Unlike many theaters elsewhere, Vienna's performance halls do have coat checks.
