One of the world's great opera houses, the Staatsoper has been the scene of countless musical triumphs and a center of unending controversy over how it should be run and by whom. (When Lorin Maazel was unceremoniously dumped as head of the opera not so many years ago, he pointed out that the house had done the same thing to Gustav Mahler almost a century earlier.) A performance takes place virtually every night from September to June, drawing on the vast repertoire of
the house, with emphasis on Mozart, Verdi, and Wagner. Guided tours are given year-round.
