Augustinerkeller
Augustinerkeller Review
Built into the old brick vaults of the 16th-century historic fortifications surrounding the old city, this is one of the last monastic wine cellars in central Vienna. The atmosphere is very gemütlich (cozy), with a vaulted brick ceiling, wooden "cow-stall" booths, street lanterns, Austrian bric-a-brac, and a troupe of roaming musicians in the evening. The spit-roasted chicken is excellent, as is the filling Stelze (roast pork knuckle).

I went to the Augustinerkeller yesterday, with my son, and had lunch on their terasse. A bad experience, in particular the service. Very slow, with the waiter not paying attention to customers waiving their hands, to try and capture his attention. When I asked another waiter passing by for a bottle of water, I was told that she was not in charge of my table, and that I should ask MY waiter. For dessert, I asked for a Strudel. When it finally arrived, I realized it had been heated in the microwave, which is the surest way to make it taste like a sponge. Unacceptable in a city known for its pastries. When I complained to the waiter, he was very smooth, saying that he would bring me a better dessert, and by the way, on the credit card voucher he had just brought, this is where I could enter the tip& When he realized I was not going to give him a tip, he became furious, and said he had changed his mind and would not bring a new dessert (my original one had been carried away in the meantime). I asked to speak to the person in charge of the restaurant (I had to go and see him, since he had no time to come to the table). He muttered some kind of excuse (a dinner for 500 persons to be prepared for the evening), and gave me another dessert. I recommend you do not go to the Augustinerkeller. A pity, because it is a very pitoresque restaurant.
