This budget hotel close to Vienna's main Westbahnhof railway station was awarded the Austrian environment-friendly label from the Ministry for Economic Affairs in 2005: water is heated by solar cells, rainwater is recycled, and the flat roofs are used for gardening. A courtyard abounds with plants and flowers, and it's the lovely setting for the outdoor breakfast made up entirely of produce, which is free of genetically modified products. The homey rooms are quiet and individually styled; some of Austria's well-known artists have had a hand in embellishing the interiors. An additional 30 rooms are set to open in early 2009. Pros: eco-friendly; Sunday arrivals usually get a lower rate for whole stay; some cheap rates available via Internet. Cons: busy roads nearby.
