Vienna keeps the Christmas flame burning perhaps more brightly than any other metropolis in the world. Here, during the holiday season, no fewer than nine major Christkindlmärkte (Christmas Markets) proffer their wares, with stands selling enough wood-carved Austrian toys, crêche figures, and Tannenbaum ornaments to tickle anybody's mistletoes. Many of the markets have food vendors selling Glühwein (mulled wine) and Kartoffelpuffer (potato patties). In our opinion, the best markets include the following. The Altwiener Christkindlmarkt is held on one of Vienna's biggest squares.
