Universität (University of Vienna)

Universität (University of Vienna) Review

After the one in Prague, Vienna's is the oldest university in the German-speaking world (founded in 1365). The main section of the university is a massive block in Italian Renaissance style designed by Heinrich Ferstel and built between 1873 and 1884. Statues representing 38 important men of letters decorate the front of the building, while the rear, which encompasses the library (with nearly 2 million volumes), is adorned with sgraffito. English-language guided tours costing €5 are given every Saturday morning at 11:30 (start at the main entrance). Audio guides are available for €3.
