Rathaus (City Hall)

Rathaus (City Hall) Review

Designed by Friedrich Schmidt and resembling a Gothic fantasy castle with its many spires and turrets, the Rathaus was actually built between 1872 and 1883. The facade holds a lavish display of standard-bearers brandishing the coats of arms of the city of Vienna and the monarchy. Guided tours include the banqueting hall and various committee rooms. A regally landscaped park graces the front of the building, and is usually brimming with activity. In winter it's the scene of the most famous Christmas market in Vienna; in summer concerts are performed here. It's open by guided tour only.
