Volksoper
Volksoper Review
Opera and operetta are also performed at the Volksoper, outside the city center at Währingerstrasse and Währinger Gürtel (third stop on Streetcars 41, 42, or 43, which run from Schottentor, U2, on the Ring). Prices here are significantly lower than at the Staatsoper, and performances can be every bit as rewarding. This theater has a packed calendar, with offerings ranging from the grandest opera, such as Mozart's Don Giovanni, to an array of Viennese operettas, such as Johann Strauss's Wiener Blut and Die Fledermaus, to modern Broadway musicals (in 2004, Rodgers and Hammerstein's Sound of Music finally received its first Austrian staging here). Most operas here are sung in German.
