Considered one of the world's 50 best restaurants, this eatery is definitely the most raved-about place in Austria. It's in the former Milchhauspavilion, a grand Jugendstil-vintage dairy overlooking the Wienfluss promenade in the Stadtpark, the main city park on the Ringstrasse. Winning dishes include delicate wild boar's head with "purple haze" carrots, turbot in an avocado crust, or char in beeswax, yellow turnips, and cream. At the end of the meal, an outstanding selection of more than 120 cheeses await. If you don't want the gala Steirereck experience, opt for a bite in the more casual lower-floor Meierei, which is still stylish, with its hand-painted floor and furniture in shades of milky white.

Amazing restaurant for both food and wine! Go for the tasting menu and accompanying wines -- expensive but fantastic!!

It's tough to write a review of this one because on the one hand, it's a once in a lifetime experience. Be prepared for a 3-4 hour culinary adventure. Keep in mind, the prices are on par with that of The French Laundry in California's wine country! That said, this was the most amazing meal we had on our 3 week, 6 country trip around Eastern Europe. It deserves it's award for the best restaurant in Austria. The culinary masters here could make
ANYTHING taste amazing. Renowned for their cheese, be prepared to have the strong smell from the cheese cart (sometimes parked right next to you) overwhelm your senses now and then. There is a slight language barrier if you speak only English, but when you can do what they can do with food, you don't need to say much. The tableside displays are quite impressive. Go for the 6-course tasting menu to really get a sense of Steirereck's mastery. Wear your finest dining attire and prepare to be amazed.
