Sammlung Essl Review

The Sammlung Essl contemporary art museum, somewhat alarmingly resembling a sports center from the outside, was designed by Heinz Tesar to showcase art created after 1945. The permanent collection includes works by such regional artists as Maria Lassnig, Hermann Nitsch, and Arnulf Rainer, and changing exhibitions focus on contemporary artists. To get to the museum from Vienna, take the pink-and-blue shuttle bus from Albertinaplatz 2 (outside Café Mozart) at 10, noon, 2, or 4 (return at 11, 1, 3, or 6). The bus is free only if you purchase a ticket to the museum on board. Every Wednesday evening the public is offered free entrance to the museum from 6 to 9.
