Fodor's Expert Review Sammlung Essl

Klosterneuburg

Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.

Somewhat alarmingly, this contemporary art museum resembles a sports center from the outside, but it's well worth venturing inside. The building was designed by Heinz Tesar specifically to showcase art created after 1945, and the permanent collection includes works by such regional artists as Maria Lassnig, Hermann Nitsch, and Arnulf Rainer. Changing exhibitions also focus on contemporary artists. To get to the museum from Vienna, take the pink-and-blue shuttle bus from Albertinaplatz 2 (outside Café Mozart); it runs daily (except Monday) at 10, noon, 2, and 4, returning at 11, 1, 3, and 6. The bus is free only if you purchase a ticket to the museum on board.
