Kurpark Review

For many people the primary reason to visit to Baden is the lovely, sloping Kurpark near the center of town, where outdoor public concerts are held most weekend afternoons in summer. Operetta is performed under the open sky in the Summer Arena (its roof closes if it rains); in winter performances are moved to the Stadttheater. People sit quietly under the old trees or walk through the upper sections of the Kurpark for spectacular panoramic views of the town. Much of the park is heavily wooded, but it also has pleasant garden areas displaying subtropical flowers, as well as several pavilions and statues. The old Kurhaus now houses a convention hall. During the Tertiary Period the basin stretching from the farthest edge of the park all the way to the Leitha Mountains in the distance was a gigantic sea, created when the Mediterranean flooded the area. Baden and the surrounding countryside were deep under water. The grassy slope in front of the Rudolfshof is all that is left of the "Lido di Baden."
